Harmonics are products in power networks, when loads connected to them are non-linear, the sources being Static Converters, Variable Frequency Drivers and Rectifiers devices with Switch Mode Power Supplies such as computer monitors, telephone systems, printers, scanners and electronic lighting ballasts.

The effect of the non-linear and time varying loads can be further amplified by resonance conditions, which will cause distortion of supply voltage in the network. These harmonic currents added to the fundamental current products dangerous overloads on the capacitors, leading to premature failure.
Harmonic currents cause data corruption in computer networks, contamination of audio & video signals, overheating and premature failure of motors. All these lead to poor utilization of power. It is mandatory to keep these harmonic disturbances to an acceptable level.
